Overview

Prince of Foxes is set during the Italian Renaissance and chronicles the courage of the one man with enough honor and bravery to stand up against the evil machinations of the megalomaniacal Cesare Borgia. Filmed on location in Italy, the story begins as Borgia relates his plans to his aide and confidant Andrea Corsini. His first target is an impregnable fortress defended by the Duke of Alfonso D'Este, a famed cannon maker. Since force will not allow Borgia to breach the walls he decides to try a different tack. Using Corsini as a pawn, he decides to try and convince the Duke to marry Lucrezia Borgia, his sister. Corsini succeeds, and Borgia then orders him to seduce the wife of an old duke who runs a strategically important duchy. But after meeting his intended victim and her husband, Corsini balks. Enraged, Borgia decides to take a more direct approach.

Editorial Reviews

Those who enjoy lavishly mounted period pieces will find a great deal to enjoy in Prince of Foxes. While it's a shame that Foxes was filmed in black and white when it practically screams for gorgeous, lush color, the film still is a visual treat. With Leon Shamroy on board as cinematographer, this is no surprise, for Shamroy is a master with the camera. What makes Foxes particularly satisfying is that Shamroy has been turned loose on some truly magnificent locations throughout Italy. With director Henry King guiding him, Shamroy frames the actors in setting after setting that is simply beautiful. It also doesn't hurt that Vittorio Nino Novarese has supplied some eye-catching costumes or that the art and set designers have done their job so well. It's a shame that screenwriter Milton Krims couldn't have supplied them with a better script; for all its visual splendor, Foxes is a ponderous, pretentious work that needs to be lighter and more dynamic. Star Tyrone Power does his best to add some swashbuckling flair, but there's only so much he can do. Orson Welles has a field day, which helps tremendously, but his part is relatively brief. As the female lead, Wanda Hendrix is attractive but dramatically unsatisfying. The supporting cast, however, is quite good.
