After two-plus decades of making eyeliner depression accessible, the Cure continues its tragedy-spun hit parade. This visual reckoning represents the godfathers of Goth, led by headmaster Robert Smith, in all the many shades of their career. The Cure formed at a time when England was reeling from the late-'70s punk explosion and distinguished themselves from the post-punk, new wave flood with artful control and a literate sensibility. The band found its definitive video accomplice in Tim Pope (The Crow: City of Angels), who directed most of these clips. The Cure match a manic sense of delight with an oddly beautiful purgatorial resignation, and the videos illuminate these dark fascinations. In addition to the fanciful set designs of "Lovesong" and the crafty spit-in-the-eye flash of "Friday I'm in Love," the previously released clips are complemented on the VHS and DVD with studio footage that serves as ad hoc video material for several more tracks. Also included are two new recordings, "Cut Here" and "Just Say Yes," the latter a duet with Republica singer Saffron. The new songs employ the group's consistent devotion to whirling melody while continuing a more recent search for brighter corners in a woeful world. The songs included are:
