Overview

In this musical comedy, Dodie (Jane Powell) is a young girl who finds herself in a jam after she accepts the marriage proposals of three different men (Tom Noonan, Cliff Robertson, and Keith Andes). With time running out, Dodie must decide what she wants most in a husband. A remake of the movie Tom, Dick and Harry, this film was choreographed by Gower Champion and features a number of songs, including "The Girl Most Likely," "I Don't Know What I Want," and "All the Colors of the Rainbow."

Jane Powell's final film musical, The Girl Most Likely is a disappointing adaptation of the more magical Tom, Dick and Harry, although is moderately entertaining on its own terms. The screenplay has been softened too much from its original source, and thus lacks punch and sparkle, so there's little real wit here. The cast is also not comparable to the earlier version, but Powell is pleasant as always, and Kaye Ballard, in her only musical film, adds zest and life. The men are the weakest links. Keith Andes is fine but undistinguished; Tommy Noonan is forced; and Cliff Robertson is ill-at-ease. The songs are merely serviceable; but they are lively and sport some expert Nelson Riddle arrangements that are very hard to resist. (The title number, Riddle's contribution, is given a rousing vocal performance by the Hi-Lo's.) Gower Champion's staging of the musical numbers is a big plus, making up for Mitchell Leisen's lackluster direction. Mildly diverting, The Girl Most Likely ambles and meanders around in an amiable enough way without making much of an impact.
