Overview

Ducks, Geese, and Swans of North America has been hailed as a classic since the first edition was published in 1942. Originally authored by F. H. Kortright and later revised by Frank Bellrose, this latest edition, which has been meticulously updated by renowned waterfowl biologist Guy Baldassarre, continues the legacy of esteemed authors. Each species account contains in-depth sections on:

Guy Baldassarre was a professor of wildlife ecology at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse until his death in 2012. He is the coauthor of the textbook, Waterfowl Ecology and Management.

Issued in an attractive slipcase, this is a de facto and worthy fourth edition of previous well-received books with the same title, the second by the late Baldassarre (wildlife ecology and management, State Univ. of New York, Syracuse; one of Outdoor Life's "Outdoor 25"). Its information is massive—encyclopedic—and well organized. For each of North America's 46 waterfowl species there are extensive sections on identification, distribution, population status, migration, habitat, breeding biology, rearing of young, survival, food habits, molts, plumages, conservation, and management. Most sections have clearly delineated subsections. The superb text is enhanced with large color paintings by a celebrated artist, the late Bob Hines, depictions of the wings, photographs, and a detailed distribution map. In the case of the Canada Goose complex there are 11 maps. Unfortunately, the thousands of literature citations and five supplemental maps are relegated to a CD-ROM in Volume 2. Introductory material is limited, mostly a clear explanation of the book's organization but includes a glossary. The index is only to species' common and scientific names yet gives valuable access to the many references to a species outside of its main account. VERDICT Of prime interest to naturalists, biologists, birders, and hunters. Highly recommended.
