Can our loved ones communicate with us from beyond the grave? That persistent, still unanswered question animates this engrossing Kevin Costner vehicle, which is part tear-jerking drama and part supernatural thriller. Working in an unfamiliar genre, director Tom Shadyac (Patch Adams) crafts a suitably eerie, somber film that recalls The Sixth Sense and The Mothman Prophecies. Costner plays Dr. Joe Darrow, whose lingering grief over his wife's untimely death has begun to affect the quality of his hospital work. Already unbalanced, Joe seems to go over the edge when several young patients, who've all had near-death experiences, convey to him cryptic messages that apparently originate from his dear, departed Emily. From this point on, Dragonfly focuses on its protagonist's efforts to decipher the messages and go where they lead him. Shadyac maintains a suspenseful air throughout, even when the plot calls for his viewers to be whisked, along with Joe Darrow, to a tropical Third World jungle where crucial information might be found. Costner handles his role with appropriate solemnity, and he's backed up by sterling performances from supporting players Joe Morton, Ron Rifkin, Kathy Bates, and Linda Hunt. Intense and unnerving, Dragonfly never resorts to cheap scares or clichéd situations. This avoidance of conventional thriller techniques makes the movie's supernatural aspects a lot easier for some to accept -- and a lot more difficult for others to dismiss. Shadyac provides a feature-length commentary for the DVD, which also sports a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, and a theatrical trailer.
