Overview

In this musical, a Broadway star is dismayed to discover that her husband-the-producer is messing around. The broken-hearted actress then quits the show, feigns memory loss and goes home to Miami where her she began her career years before using her old stage names. There, she attempts to recapture her old life, and fall in love with the town Romeo. When the producer finds out, he is jealous; not wanting to lose her, he proclaims his love and swears to never make love to another. Song and dance numbers include: "It's a Hot Night in Alaska," "I Feel Like Dancing," "No Talent Joe," and "Bettin' on a Man."

Fans of Betty Grable and devotees of Hollywood musicals are the best bet for Meet Me After the Show, a paper thin musical comedy that is saved by its exuberant dance numbers. Most Hollywood musicals of the period tended to have script problems, and 20th Century Fox's were particularly guilty of this; the studio tended to find what worked best for a star like Grable and then build variation after variation on it. Show at least has some good gags in it and some amusing situations to carry it along between numbers -- but it's definitely the musical pieces that make the film worth looking. Choreographed by the singular Jack Cole, Show has even more dancing than is usual in a Grable picture, and it shows her off to very good effect. Grable responds well to the demands Cole, a notorious taskmaster, makes and comes out shining. Even when she's having to share the stage with the then-unknown but still formidable Gwen Verdon, Grable holds her own and then some. (Fans of Cole's work in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes will especially enjoy the "No Talent Joe" number.) The Jule Styne-Leo Robin score is a bit of a letdown; it's serviceable but not especially memorable. But as long as it gives Grable a chance to cut loose, no one's going to complain too much.
