Overview

Based on a novel by Joseph Shearing, this film focuses on charming scoundrel Mark Bellis. Escaping his latest criminal escapade by boat, Bellis falls victim to a malaria epidemic. Nursed back to health by young widow Olivia Harwood, Bellis repays the favor by plotting to deplete her bank account.

A nifty little crime thriller with noir overtones, So Evil My Love may fall short of being a classic but has enough going for it to make it worth a viewing, especially by those who favor films of deceit and deception. Certainly the cast is not to blame for Evil falling short of classic status. Ray Milland is right at home playing a cad who oozes charm by the bucket; sure, he's no good and that becomes clear rather early on, but Milland is so smooth that one can easily see why a person would deny what's right in front of her face and then, when it can't be denied, start down the long path of ruin. And Ann Todd is simply sensational as the missionary's widow who falls under his spell and can't break out; it's a lovely, nuanced performance that still hits plenty of highs. Geraldine Fitzgerald is vulnerable and sympathetic, and Raymond Huntley plays ice in his veins quite convincingly. Smaller supporting players, including Leo G. Carroll, are also valuable. The problem is that {Ronald Millar and Leonard Spiegelgass's screenplay is convoluted and confused, as well as a bit too talky; as a result, director Lewis Allen can't build up the appropriate amount of suspense and the film drags. Allen does do a marvelous job of creating the Victorian era, but the film needs more energy than he can give it.
