As indicated by its title, Upstairs and Downstairs has something to do with British masters and servants. Michael Craig marries the bosses' daughter (Anne Heywood), and finds he is required to entertain important clients at a moment's notice. The problem is that the couple can't seem to hold on to their servants. Whenever the agency sends over a new maid or serving girl, the results are disastrous. While most of us can't relate to the travails of Britain's upper class, the difficulties inherent in staging the "perfect" dinner party is an element in Upstairs and Downstairs that virtually everyone can relate to and laugh at (from a safe distance, of course).
