Everyone can do their part to help take care of the earth. Each person's efforts add to make a difference in helping the planet. The characters in the story tell what they can do to help to help the environment and their reasons why. For instance, using both sides of the paper and bringing your own bags are ways to appreciate the trees and the homes of owls. Although the message about conserving paper usage is inferred, children may benefit from a discussion to understand the inference made about the connection between conserving paper to trees and owls. There are additional ecological ideas but the relationships may not be clear for children. Even more confusing is how eating all the food on your plate and saving leftovers connects to watching things grow in the garden and having enough food for people. A poster is included in the book with a list of ten ways to conserve. Some of the principles, however, are not explained in the main text, and a few do not make sense like putting underwear in the freezer when it is hot. The bold and bright illustrations with black outlining illustrations attract the eyes but the ecological message is unclear without further discussion to make connections about going green. Parr then offers a practical catalog of simple activities easily managed by even quite young children, followed by clear explanations of how those simple things can have a large impact on the health of our planet. "I use both sides of the paper and bring my own bags to market because…I love the trees and I want the owls to have a place to live." The book is "printed with recycled materials and nontoxic soy inks." The vibrantly colored cartoons with heavy black outlines resemble those a child might create.
