About the Author

DR. ELLEN J. PRAGER writes on geology and marine-related topics for children and adults and is the Assistant Dean at the Rosentiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami. She's the author of The Furious Earth: The Science and Nature of Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Tsunamis. She is also the author of two other Jump Into Science books, Volcano! and Sand.

A whole lot of engaging shakin’ is going on throughout this National Geographic Kids “Jump into Science” series picture book about earthquakes. The illustrator is ingenious in showing the power of earthquakes as bridges break, rivers change course, and buildings sway. Using non-threatening pastels and a raven guide, the reader has a bird’s eye view of the earth’s quivering during earthquakes. The writer is thorough, defining where earthquakes occur predominately, explaining how earthquakes happen, why they happen, and what measures people are taking to protect themselves. The brief introduction, which begins with “Shake, Rattle, and Roll...,” is energetic; and there is no doubt that earthquakes are exciting! When rocks under earth and sea break, they send energy into the ground, making the earth shake, crack or undulate for a very brief instant or several minutes. Young readers from kindergarten to the early elementary grades will respond with great interest to this topic. The illustrations and smooth text demand this book be read aloud, but the amazing amount of information and depth of the artwork also engage the reader personally. The author asks the reader a personal question at the end and then presents a lab for young students for creating their own earthquake.
