Overview

The 22 essays assembled here were written between 1980 and 2003; most were published after Ashcar (politics and international relations, U. of Paris—VIII) moved from Lebanon to France in 1983, when he became a regular contributor to the Marxist magazines Inprecor and International Viewpoint. Several have never been previously translated into English (from the French), and a new article is included tracing the development of US strategy in the Middle East. Gilbert Achcar grew up in Lebanon and now teaches politics and international relations at the University of Paris—VIII. He is a frequent contributor to Le Monde Diplomatique and the author of The Clash of Barbarisms: September 11 and the Making of the New World Disorder (Monthly Review Press, 2002).
