EDUCATING THE URBAN CHILD & ENGAGING THE URBAN PARENT/CAREGIVER
From disruptive students to irate parents, teaching in any classroom—nonetheless, an urban classroom presents an immense challenge to even the most seasoned and credentialed educators. This book is intended to serve as a guide, a framework, which will assist educators in finding and maintaining order in urban classrooms and schools across the country. Further, this book has been designed with a goal of becoming required reading for all current and aspiring educators.
The book is largely motivated and based upon a professional development workshop that I held for the staff of a private, state-run school in the Phase-In process in Memphis, Tennessee and addresses the inherent issues in an urban class that even the most experienced school administrators and teachers face. The school and its staff were facing a backlash from the parents and community members during its first year of operation. After being approached by a concerned community member with strong ties to the school that was also familiar with my experience and expertise within Memphis City Schools, I was asked to present the workshop. Drawing on 16 years of classroom experience in Memphis, I developed the presentation to address the key components of a successful urban classroom that are often not addressed or only glossed over in mainstream college-level educational courses that will literally make or break a teacher or school system in an urban setting, such as Memphis. These components, combined with editorialized research that will provide the reader with affirmation of the components and additional materials relating to the subject, are included in the following chapters. It is my sincere intent that this book will be as well received as the presentation was; 96.8% of the highly qualified educators attending the workshop and completing the survey found the workshop to be helpful and agreed that they would incorporate key elements of the presentation into their day-to-day teaching.
