About the Author

Chris Pye has been carving professionally for over 20 years. He started carving for a house-sign company, being paid per letter. Hundreds of signs later he had perfected an efficient and precise way of lettering, which he shares here. Chris writes regularly for Woodcarving magazine, and has written other books on carving. In addition to teaching woodcarving for all abilities, his is ordained into the Western Buddhist Order. He lives in Herefordshire, England with his family.

An excellent section on the several methods of holding work and biographical information on two great carvers who influenced Pye complete this title. Fox-Wilson, an Anglican priest with a lifelong interest in carving, shows readers how to carve nature subjects through a series of 17 projects. These subjects include a heron, a turtle, a fish, a bowl shaped like a curved leaf, several canes, and a wreath of leaves that is evocative of the classic work of Grinling Gibbons. Fox-Wilson covers projects from initial design through completion, offering tips on wood selection and finishing.
