Anne Donovan is an Army nurse serving in Vietnam who questions just what her service really means. Troubled by the suffering she encounters every day, Anne wonders if all she accomplishes in her work is to temporarily patch soldiers up only in order to send them back into the death zone of war. Feelings surge up when Anne meets a wounded soldier from Texas whose resilience touches her. After being given a two week leave Anne returns to duty just in time to be dispatched to a frontline medical station as American soldiers launch a brutal assault on Hamburger Hill. There, during what is sometimes viewed as a futile offensive, Anne Donovan finds both personal pain and her purpose as a soldier. Emergency OPS ends with readers having a much better understanding of not only what its characters have experienced but also the nature of war. This chapter in Sherman's "Bloodlines" series takes readers into a combat zone just as is the case in other books in the series.
