The people in Idaville refer to Leroy Brown as Encyclopedia Brown. He is a ten-year-old child who has a great talent for solving mysteries for his friends. His prices are very reasonable—twenty-five cents a day and it does not hurt that his father is also the chief of police. There are ten chapters, each with a perplexing mystery. I had to smile when I came across statements such as "He's like a tube of toothpaste-the harder you press him, the more he tries to come out on top," "Jump off the roof and you'll find out what an anchor does," and "The hair on Encyclopedia's neck stood up faster than sitting Bull on a branding iron." Each chapter ends with Encyclopedia Brown stating that he knows what happened. The author gives the reader enough clues to figure out the actual culprit. It is fun to think you know the answer and can give reasonable reasons and then be able to turn to the back of the book and see it you are correct (I was wrong on a few). This book is a great way to introduce children to the art of reading for details. This book was enjoyable from the first page, and it should appeal to both boys and girls. It is easy to read, makes you smile, and encourages reader to actually think! This is just one of the "Encyclopedia Brown" series. What a perfect way to start building a child's personal library.
