About the Author

Lawrence Lowery taught in the Oakland, CA, public schools before becoming a professor of science education at the University of California, Berkeley. He has more than 40 years’ experience creating science activities and programs, developing curricula, and writing articles and books, including the NSTA Press publication The Everyday Science Sourcebook and the I Wonder Why series.

Within these pages, animated illustrations and simple vocabulary explain the six different regions of the earth: tropical rainforests, woodlands, savannas, prairies, steppes, and deserts. Maps explain where each is located. The lengthy introduction and handbook at the back may make some think this book is more applicable for teachers than for students, but do not be fooled. The factual information on each page transports the reader to the different environmental regions. I do feel the author could have brought more interest to the text by using more action verbs throughout. The outstanding cover shows the animal life within these regions and gives a preview of what’s inside. Parents and teachers should investigate the handbook to find experiments that will help advance student knowledge as well as ways to engage the reader further. Part of the “I Wonder Why” series.
