This first edition describes a technique for performing rhinoplastic surgery on various types of non-Caucasian noses, emphasizing the use of autologous tissue for augmentation. Through the use of well selected clinical cases, the author illustrates the important points of patient assessment with emphasis on the application of his unique "peapod" graft. The author admits that this is not an all-inclusive rhinoplasty text, but rather a focused look at his management of a particularly difficult aspect of this surgical art, and a means to "encourage and assist rhinoplastic surgeons" with the non-Caucasian rhinoplasty. The intended audience is identified as rhinoplastic surgeons. Although students and residents will be given an in-depth review of the philosophy and techniques for augmentation rhinoplasty, seasoned surgeons will find enough useful information to warrant reading this book, especially in regard to the "peapod" graft. The anatomical variations with respect to race and the different ethnic concepts of an ideal nose are valuable reading for all. The liberal use of photographs and diagrams augments the text and makes the intended message quite clear. A series of detailed cases with preoperative and postoperative assessments, again with diagrams and photographs, helps the reader further evaluate the author's technique. Emphasis on the thoroughness of patient selection and evaluation and the importance of establishing reasonable patient expectations cannot be overstated. Because of the author's vast experience with different ethnic groups, he is able to give valuable insight into their desires and expectations, particularly those that differ from what would appear obvious orintuitive. This is a valuable asset to rhinoplastic surgeons. It offers a way to affect a significant surgical change in noses that are difficult to alter by traditional rhinoplasty techniques. It also gives insight into the expectations and desires of different ethnic groups when they seek changes in the appearance of their noses.
