Sara Holland grew up between small-town Minnesota and the countless fictional worlds of books. She graduated from Wesleyan University and worked in a tea shop, a dentist’s office, and a state capitol building before heading to New York to work in publishing. Time is a precious commodity taken from blood and consumed by another to prolong their life in Sempera. When Jules’s father is ready to lose months of his life to pay the rent, she obtains employment at Everless, the home of the wealthiest aristocracy, where time will be her income. Jules and her father worked there previously, but an incident between Jules and two brothers, Liam and Roan, made them flee. Upon returning to Everless, Jules hopes not to be recognized by staff and the regal court. With the impending arrival of the queen, Jules must decide whether to stay and gain more time or be mired in deception, as she gets closer to the truth about her actual parentage and her mysterious time powers that are slowly growing. Bartering time at the cost of shortening or enhancing a lifespan is an intriguing and deadly concept. How can one justify lessening one’s time just to get by in life? Is it wrong to prolong a life at the expense of another, even if the other is a willing participant? Once Jules returns to Everless, the tension rises and Holland captures this by introducing more twists (that do not blog down the pacing). The trope of a character finding out their parentage is not what they always thought can be overdone; however, the author brings much sentiment to Jules’s plight.
