Everyday and Academic Mathematics in the Classroom
This monograph attempts to clarify the terms "everyday mathematics" and "academic mathematics" to objectively analyze what happens when teachers bring aspects of both into the classroom. The authors begin by introducing the examination of everyday and academic mathematical practices, the nature of those practices, students' perceptions of everyday math, the process of integrating the two practices, tools to build curriculum with everyday problem solving, bringing together workplace and academic mathematics in classroom assignments, and an essay on whether everyday mathematics is truly relevant to mathematics education. Chapters include exercises and references, but this monograph does not include an index. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
