Part of the "Explore" series from Nomad Press, this book focuses on the culture of the Greek civilization during the years 800 to 31 BCE. Seven chapters explore specific aspects of Greek civilization, such as the Olympics, a democratic form of government and religion. Each chapter consists of short, readable sections divided by hands-on activities that help bring a tangible understanding of Greek culture. Many of the activities—like making a foot scrub or a theater mask—children can do independently; others—such as making a Greek salad or a Trojan horse—will require some adult supervision. The design is definitely kid-friendly, with line-drawn illustrations and comics, jokes and sidebars with interesting tidbits of information. Unfamiliar words are highlighted in bold lettering and defined within the text, in a sidebar on the page, and again in a glossary at the end of the book. Some children may have trouble reading the distinctive Greek-style font used for the vocabulary words. Fortunately, the rest of the text is in a more readable font. An index and table of contents make it easy for readers to find specific information, and an extensive list of resources that includes books, websites and museums will encourage students to find out more about this influential ancient civilization. This book would be an excellent resource for a social studies unit on ancient Greece, and the many activities will give tactical learners a firm grasp on this significant culture.
