Alex Kim is a Cartoonist and Illustrator currently living and working Vermont. He earned an MFA from The Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont and a B. Arch from The Cooper Union in New York, NY.

This book provides basic information about ancient Rome from its founding by Romulus and Remus to its collapse in the fifth century. Seven chapters about topics such as education, religion, architecture, and politics explore the basics of Roman life. Each chapter consists of short, readable sections divided by hands-on activities that help bring a tangible understanding of Roman culture. Many of the activities—like making a mosaic, a soap votive, or playing charades—children can do independently; others—such as baking bread or sewing a tunic—will require some adult supervision. The design is definitely kid-friendly, with line-drawn illustrations and comics, jokes, and sidebars with interesting tidbits of information. Unfamiliar words are highlighted in bold lettering and defined within the text in a sidebar on the page and again in a glossary at the end of the book. An index and table of contents make it easy for readers to find specific information, and an extensive list of resources that includes books, magazines, websites, and museums, will encourage students to find out more about this influential ancient civilization. This book would be an excellent resource for a social studies unit about the Roman Empire, and the many activities will give tactical learners a firm grasp on this important culture.
