Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cathi I. White

Eyes can be blue, brown, green, hazel, and gray. The hues of each color can also be light or dark. Why are there so many colors and hues? Readers will learn how genes are responsible for the different colors and hues of eyes. Brown eyes are from a dominant gene, whereas blue eyes are from a recessive one. The author explains how alleles in genes help determine the color of a person's eyes. These alleles are inherited from one or both parents. Readers will discover how pigments in the eyes give their color and also protect the eyes from light. These pigments will establish whether a person's eyes are dark or light in color. For example, a person with blue or green eyes will have less pigment in their eyes than someone with brown eyes. Children will find out how alleles can make certain eye colors recessive and others dominant. Children will enjoy the easy-to-read material while looking at the photos that enhance the information. There are activity pages in the back for children to complete with their classmates to increase their knowledge. Furthermore, there is a glossary for better understanding key vocabulary words and a section for further reading, which includes websites, to help the children learn more about genes and traits. This informational book is part of the "Lightning Bolt Book" series "What Traits Are in Your Genes?" This enlightening book would be excellent for the classroom. Reviewer: Cathi I. White
