Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cathi I. White

Everyone's face has different features. Freckles can be on your nose, cheeks or all over your face. Some people have a lot of freckles while others have none. In addition, ears and earlobes can be distinctive. Some earlobes are longer than others. Some lobes are attached to the face while others hang away from the face. Some ears are unique and pointed at the top. Noses also come in many shapes and sizes. They can be big, small, straight or curvy. Faces also can have dimples or cleft chins. All of these features are traits that are inherited from your parents. Genes are responsible as to what kind of nose you have, whether you have freckles, or how your earlobes hang. Readers will discover how alleles in genes play an important part in directing the body in how facial features will look. Children will enjoy the easy-to-read material while looking at the photos that enhance the information. There are activity pages in the back for children to do with their classmates to increase their knowledge. There is a glossary for better understanding and a section for further reading, which includes websites, to help the children learn more about genes and traits. This instructive book is part of the "Lightning Bolt Book" series "What Traits Are in Your Genes?" This enlightening book would be excellent for the classroom. Reviewer: Cathi I. White
