After three ghosts, it looks like things might be going back to normal for Anderson and his friends Greg and Julie. It's been a while since any ghosts have shown up, and the most annoying things lately are the loud barking dogs at the Dogs and Suds pet-grooming shop next door to the Kitchen Sink. Anderson and his friends Greg and Julie have already had three adventures involving ghost soldiers with unsettled business. In each instance, they have been able to figure out why the disturbed spirits were searching for closure; but now they have a new encounter. It is December in Fredericksburg, Virginia. and the dogs in a local grooming shop are disturbed. For some reason, the canines are constantly barking as if some presence is in the building. What’s more, this pattern of barking seems to happen for a week or so every December. The source of the dog’s unhappiness appears in the form of the ghost of a Union soldier. Over time the three middle schoolers, with the assistance of an awkward schoolmate, discover a great deal about this Yankee spirit. As the children learn more about this departed Civil War soldier, they also discover just how terrible the Battle of Fredericksburg was back in 1862. The children also learn what actually happened to the person who this ghost once was. In so doing, Anderson and his partners find things out not only about their quest, but also themselves as well. Book four in Steve Watkins’ “Ghosts of War” mystery series, the story is well told. A touch of humor mixed with historical fact make the book a quick and pleasant read.
