About the Author

Michael Grant has spent much of his life on the move. Raised in a military family, he attended ten schools in five states, as well as three schools in France. Even as an adult he kept moving, and in fact became a writer in part because it was one of the few jobs that wouldn't tie him down. His fondest dream is to spend a year circumnavigating the globe and visiting every continent. Yes, even Antarctica. He lives in California with his wife, Katherine Applegate, and their two children.

It has been four months of relative peace in the FAYZ. The killing flu is over, the supersized bugs are gone, and the remaining kids have divided themselves between living under Sam's council at Lake Tramonto or at Perdido Beach with King Caine. Regardless of location or leader, they have all found some degree of success in the everyday struggle for survival. When a dark stain begins to creep upward in multiple locations on the barrier wall, both camps realize this could be the final, fatal blow. If the stain closes out all the daylight, how will kids without a "Sammy sun" keep safe? More importantly, without sunshine, how will anything grow? As the fifth entry in a series of six books, it is a relief to have a few of the original puzzles solved, but the solutions are not absolutely complete, and new queries are ready to take their place. One of the most satisfying revelations is discovering what has been happening outside the dome, but it raises deeper questions about life before the FAYZ. Most threatening moments in the story come from elements beyond the kids' control, giving a bleaker, more desperate aspect to their actions. Adding a layer of tension is the underlying feeling that judgment day is drawing near, but who will be judge and who will be jury? Fans can count on more excellent storytelling, multidimensional characters who continue to develop in unexpected ways, and some mighty fine eye-popping moments.
