About the Author

Liesbet Slegers (1975, Belgium) studied Graphics and Illustrations at the Saint-Lucas institute of Antwerp. She works as a fulltime graphic designer and illustrator. With her simple, recognizable style and vivid colours she knows how to attract the attention of every toddler.

In her many books, Slegers frequently focuses on "the first experience of a toddler," a time she characterized as "exciting but also very scary! I try to help them with my books," she added, "and also try to give the parents or teacher some assistance!"

In very simplistic terms, this book explains some of what firefighters do. First the firefighters get a call at the station telling them where the fire is. The illustrations show them sliding down the pole to get to their trucks. The description of what they wear is interesting, but there is no in-depth description of how the firefighters put the fire out. Even very young children would like more detail on why the workers carry axes and beltlines. The firefighters head back to their station after they put out the fire, but on the way they come across a motorist stuck behind a fallen tree blocking the road. They hook the cable on the fire engine around the tree and pull it out of the road. Then they go back to their station. Still, the book does leave an opening for a discussion of fire safety and a more detailed look into fighting fires. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan; Ages 2 to 5.
