Overview

The scope of Fischer’s Mastery of Surgery, Sixth Edition, is consistent with the broad training of a general surgeon, providing extensive coverage of vascular surgery as well as of common thoracic, breast, esophageal, endocrine, colorectal, gastric, pancreatic, liver, and biliary procedures.   Each procedural chapter reviews the essentials of diagnosis, anatomy, and pre-operative planning, but focuses most heavily on step-by-step depictions and descriptions of procedures.  Each chapter concludes, as is traditional for this classic text, with an editorial commentary which strives to put the chapter in a broad context and provide helpful critiques of the most recent literature. The sixth edition will include a dozen new chapters, including endovascular treatment of varicose veins, fasciotomy, and thoracic aortic transaction. The vascular section has been completely reorganized and will incorporate both open and endovascular procedures. For the first time, the sixth edition is in full color.

Description: This is the sixth edition of a classic, comprehensive, two-volume, multiauthored textbook that combines information on surgical disease processes with a wealth of information and lavish illustrations of surgical procedures. Access to a web version with less common (mostly older) procedures is included. The previous edition was published in 2007 and the rapid advance of the field amply justifies this new edition.
Purpose: The editor-in-chief acknowledges the changes in surgery and surgical education and states in part, "We need this book to teach how operations are performed — so that residents and young attendings can have some understanding of the intricacies of operative procedures." This is an admirable objective. This book is needed now more than ever and the current edition definitely meets and even exceeds these objectives.
Audience: This book will be of primary value to surgical residents, fellows, and young attendings (as noted in the preface). It also will find a home on the bookshelf of many general surgeons. General surgeons and subspecialty surgeons in the disciplines which flow from general surgery (e.g. transplant, vascular) all will find this useful. The editors and authors are all luminaries in their fields.
Features: This book covers, system by system, anatomic region by region, and organ by organ (as appropriate), essentially all general surgery operations. It differs from the classic textbooks of surgery in its emphasis, throughout, on safe and careful operative technique. It differs from operative atlases in the wealth of detailed information about the individual disease processes and the nature of decision making involved. It is THE book that surgical residents hope they will get for graduation or special occasions. The use of the web not only for online access for registered users but also to expand the material by archiving older operations (such as vagotomy) is welcome. Sections on procedures such as breast reconstruction very nicely tell general surgeons (who are unlikely to actually perform these procedures) what is involved, without going into unnecessary technical detail.
Assessment: This sixth edition continues to very nicely follow and even exceed the path established by the earlier editions. It occupies a unique niche in surgical education materials. Rapid expansion of the field amply justifies the new edition.
