Ever wonder why flamingos are pink? It is because they eat tiny plants and animals that turn their feathers pink. They also live throughout the world in lagoons, lakes, and swamps. Flamingos have long necks and legs, growing to almost five feet tall and weighing as much as a newborn baby. They can live in groups of up to one thousand, moving together as they twist their necks. Because they live in such a large group, they honk when a predator is near. Before chicks are born, the parents take turns sitting on the egg. They hatch in twenty-seven to thirty-one days, and the white or gray chicks are fed red "milk" produced from the parents' throats. Chicks' feathers turn pink after three years, and adult flamingos can live up to thirty years. Large, vivid color illustrations of flamingos are shown to correspond with the text. A glossary is included to introduce early readers to possibly unfamiliar words and their definitions. Although most of the words are age appropriate for early readers, an adult may need to help them pronounce and comprehend some words in the table of contents, sources listed for further reading, recommended Internet sites, and index.
