K-Gr 2—In each title, brief sentences on the recto face a full-page color photo on the verso. The books include introductions to the featured animal, a "Did You Know?" page of further fun facts, a true-or-false quiz with answers at the bottom of the page, and a glossary, which defines words that are in bold font in the text. The language is breezy and clear. Humans in the narratives are named, making the texts inviting. For example, Juan's bunny nibbles on a carrot, Dusty is Elliot's foal, and Lauren's piglet snuggles in the hay. The information is enough to whet appetites, but is too limited for study. The large, clear photos are a huge draw. This set will be attractive to new readers who are keen on baby animals.

This is the perfect book for a young learner interested in baby horses, or foals. The words are short, simple, and large in font size, making them easily accessible to early readers, and new words are bolded with reference to a glossary at the back. With only a few words per page, some older non-readers will also remain attentive. The full color, high quality photographs also contribute nicely to the learners’ engagement with the book regardless of age or reading ability, particularly since two of the photographs depict children—one boy and one girl. However, both children are Caucasian, so the images are not ethnically diverse. The text covers basic information about domesticated foals’ typical living conditions, lifestyles, and physical appearance, including mention of specific children who own foals and their appropriate interactions with these animals as pets. In addition to the glossary, the back matter also includes a “Did You Know?” page with specific average statistics about foals and a “Foal Quiz” with statements based on the text to be marked true or false (and the answers appear upside-down at the bottom of the page).
