Gateway to Australia

Sydney is a city in a hurry.  It has the tallest buildings, the most expensive real estate, the finest beaches, and the seediest nightlife of any Australian city.

In many ways, Sydney has turned its cosmopolitan back on the heartland and established itself as a separate entity altogether. For the average Sydneysider, life unfolds in one of the red-roofed suburbs that sprawl around the city, and these suburban streets are the true terrain of Australia —
bush talk is reserved for encounters with foreigners.

Other Australian cities can claim the title of the nation's cultural capital with more justification, but Sydney's panache and appetite for life are unchallenged. A walk among the scantily clad bathers at Bondi Beach or through the raucous nightlife district of Kings Cross provides evidence enough.

Visiting Sydney is an essential part of an Australian experience, but the city is no more representative of Australia than New York is of the United States. Sydney has joined the ranks of the great cosmopolitan cities whose characters are essentially international. For visitors from
European or North American cities, Sydney's architecture, customs, and cuisine will be no more than a variation on a familiar theme.
