Living things need food for a variety of reasons. They need food for moving, growing, and for energy. This applies to all living things: people, animals, and plants. Nunn manages to distill the science of food so that little eyes and minds can understand. Although parents will enjoy reading this book to their little ones, Nunn has tailored the text for beginning readers. Teachers can use this volume to supplement science content while encouraging students to read nonfiction. Although the Next Generation Science Standards encourages educators to avoid stating plants consume "food," this text clearly and accurately explains that plants produce their own nutrients using air, sunlight, and water. Great photographs compliment the text. The bright, pertinent layouts encourage young ones to ask question and helps them understand the meaning of the narrative. At the end of the book, readers will find a simple glossary and index, as well as related activities little ones can perform with their guardians. Other titles in the "Why Living Things Need" series include Air, Light, and Water. Reviewer: Remy Dou
