Food Under Fire
FOOD UNDER FIRE is the story of a young man’s wartime journey and some of the trials he faced along the way. The road was anything but smooth as it wound through the deserts of North Africa, the mountains of Sicily, the beaches of France and the forests of Germany.

Noel Peters was the product of a strong family as he grew into manhood during the Great Depression. After much sacrifice and effort, he became a teacher and was pursuing his career when our country became embroiled in World War II. Noel was soon drafted and found himself serving as a mess sergeant with the elite 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division.

These encounters provided a different slant on the war that describes the effort involved in the feeding of soldiers on the front lines. Many times it involved cooking on the move. No matter how bleak the circumstances, Noel and his crew worked in daylight and in darkness to deliver hot food to the men.

This book is also about the values that were necessary to endure in the dangerous and deadly environment. Death was waiting and watching with every footstep. Not only was this about man vs. man: in many instances it was about man vs. nature. It was about courage and toughness. It was about will. It was about leadership.

With the discovery of these previously untold episodes, an amazing view of our heritage comes to light. Contained within these pages, you’ll find plenty of tragedy, a little comedy and in the end, a much sought-after victory.
