There are a number of different forms of government used in the countries of the world and there are variations of almost every form. This book explores some of the more common forms and discusses an example of each form in greater depth. Part of the “Cornerstones of Freedom” series, the chapters are prefaced with a “Setting the Scene” introduction. This introduction discusses the process by which countries form governments. The first actual chapter discusses the government of the United States, which is in the form of a republic. The chapter describes how the United States chose to declare themselves independent states and no longer subject to rule by Great Britain. Great Britain is a constitutional monarchy, as are most other European countries. That is a combination style of government with a hereditary leader and an elected legislative body. Other forms discussed in subsequent chapters are dictatorships, theocracies, and true monarchies. There are sidebars throughout the book that focus on other points of view or spotlight particular countries, leaders, or events. Additional features include a discussion of conflict, a timeline, a list of Internet sites for more in-depth reading, an index, a glossary, and a list of resources.
