About the Author

Paulette Bourgeois is the author of more than 40 books for children, including the In My Neighborhood series and Oma's Quilt. She lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Brenda Clark is best known as the illustrator of the original Franklin the Turtle series written by Paulette Bourgeois. Other popular titles she has illustrated include Sadie and the Snowman, Big Sarah's Little Boots, and the award winning, Little Fingerling. Brenda lives in Port Hope, Ontario.

Franklin, the turtle, walks upright. Harriet is Franklin's younger sister, and he is responsible for watching her as she plays. When she slides into a mud puddle and cries, he gives her his stuffed dog to calm her. She is unwilling to return it and he becomes angry. Eventually, he gets the dog back and hides it in a closet where she won't be able to find it. When Mother Turtle takes both her children for a walk, Harriet becomes tired and weepy. Franklin thinks that his stuffed dog would calm the baby and pretends he has a puppet by putting his hand in a blanket. Mother explains that it is not the dog that makes Harriet happy, it is her big brother. And so "Franklin walked a bit taller." This lesson is taught better in other titles, but this book is part of the "Franklin" series that is popular, and it will attract readers. 2001, Kids Can Press, $10.95. Ages 3 to 6.
