About the Author

Paulette Bourgeois worked as an occupational therapist and a print and television journalist before she began writing for children. When Franklin in the Dark, was released in 1986, it became a bestseller—and the Franklin phenomenon was born. Paulette has gone on to write over 30 Franklin stories illustrated by Brenda Clark that have been published around the world. Although Paulette is best known for the Franklin books, she has also written other children’s titles, including a number of non-fiction books and the award-winning picture book Oma’s Quilt. Paulette lives in Toronto, Ontario. 

After graduating from the illustration program at Sheridan College, Brenda Clark worked as a freelance illustrator for children’s magazines and books. When she was asked to illustrate Franklin in the Dark, Brenda researched turtles and other animals in order to give Franklin and his friends as many authentic details as possible. In addition to over 30 Franklin collaborations with Paulette Bourgeois, the duo created another picture-book classic, Big Sarah’s Little Boots. Brenda Clark is also the illustrator of Sadie and the Snowman and the award-winning Little Fingerling. Brenda lives in Port Hope, Ontario.

CHAPTER 1

Franklin could count by twos and tie his shoes. He had gone with his class to the bakery, the fire station and the pet store. Today Franklin's class was going to the museum. Franklin was so excited that he could hardly eat his breakfast.

The museum had lots of steps and huge doors.

"Wow, it's big," said Franklin.

"It has to be," said Beaver. "There are real dinosaurs inside."

Beaver had been to the museum before. She knew everything about it.

"Big dinosaurs," she emphasized. "So big that they ate trees for breakfast."

Franklin was afraid to ask what dinosaurs ate for lunch.

Franklin sat down on the steps.

"What's wrong?" asked Snail.

"Beaver says there are real dinosaurs in the museum."

Snail looked alarmed. "That sounds scary."

Franklin nodded.

In the museum lobby, Mr. Owl went over the rules. No shouting. No running. And stay with the group.

"Mr. Owl," said Beaver, "one more thing. Watch out for dinosaurs."

Moose and Bear laughed.

Franklin didn't. He moved a little closer to Mr. Owl.

Franklin the turtle and his other anthropomorphic animal friends are going to the museum on a class trip. Franklin is excited until he learns the museum contains real dinosaurs-then he becomes afraid and tries to avoid that section of the building. Finally Franklin faces his fear, literally, and realizes how silly he has been. Franklin fans will enjoy this book, which may be a helpful prelude to a first-time field trip.

K-Gr 2-As in her earlier titles about the turtle, Bourgeois describes a situation that most children will find familiar. This time, Franklin is going to a museum with his classmates. He can't wait to go, until he hears from Beaver that, "There are real dinosaurs inside." Terrified, Franklin and his friend Snail worry throughout the entire visit, until they find themselves face to face with a Tyrannosaurus rex-and learn that all that's left of the dinosaurs are their bones. Clark's bright illustrations capture the expressions of Franklin and his friends as they explore the museum-from their joy when dressing up as knights in the medieval room to their fear of the dinosaur exhibit. This book will make a good read-aloud, both one-on-one and in a storytime setting.
