The six-volume “Experiencing Poetry” set from Capstone presents readers with thematic poetry written during various time periods, mixing William Shakespeare and Emily Dickinson with contemporaries like Gary Soto and Nikki Giovanni. The titles reviewed introduce the poems and then spend a few pages giving readers the tools to interpret the poems. The tools vary but incorporate the poem’s structure, the historical period, the poet’s biographical information, and how the book’s theme plays out in the poem. Each title ends with writing your own poetry. Each book is short, with less than a dozen poems apiece. While the poems are mixed by time periods, they are primarily of the English-speaking western civilization viewpoint. The pages are eye-catching with full color illustrations and photographs, and text boxes to position the information in small, unintimidating chunks. While the series’ authors have selected a nice selection of well-known poetry and a nice page layout, it is doubtful that readers will pick them up on their own without being assigned poetry homework. The series, which includes Poems About Choices, Poems About Emotions, Action Poems, Humorous And Nonsensical Poems, Poems About The Natural World, and Sports Poems, will be most useful for school media centers and for classroom libraries that have a focus on creative writing.
