With an empire that occupied several diverse areas of topography, Waldron explains how the natural resources along with a mix of languages and cultures affected the Romans. This books not only explores the culture and history that started the Roman Empire but also looks at how the Romans became master engineers—building aqueducts, roads, walls, large buildings such as amphitheaters, and cities that have withstood many centuries of disasters and wars. Readers will learn that the empire had some natural boundaries and that this topography affected the areas they conquered. The book also explains that roads were important in the empire, the Romans traded goods, bathhouses were important places in town, and how the empire came to an end. Waldron also provides information on religion, culture, farming, and natural disasters. Each chapter starts with a question and Waldron provides accurate, concise, and detailed answers. This book is a great introduction to the Ancient Romans and will easily compliment other books that feature the culture and history of this time period.
