Part of the "First Facts: Bears" series, this is an enjoyable introduction to a very popular animal. Readers first learn about the relative size and appearance of giant pandas and their use as a conservation symbol. Next, the author discusses what it means to be endangered and where to find giant pandas in the wildthey live only in central China. Adult pandas eat thirty to forty pounds of bamboo leaves a day. A panda's day consists of eating, drinking, and sitting high in trees. Some pandas hibernate while many remain active all year long. Cubs are born in August or September, with the mother spending the cubs' first few weeks nurturing them. Cubs are on their own by age three. The biggest threat to pandas are humans. Throughout the story, many odd facts help to maintain interest. Numerous color and action-filled photos provide an excellent backdrop for learning about the bears. Reference aids include a table of contents, brief glossary, "Read More" and "Internet Sites" sections, and an index. These references make this a valuable resource. The writing is simple enough for younger children but filled with enough information to be valuable for middle grades. Reviewer: Sue Poduska
