Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Troisi

Scoff down five servings of grain a day prescribes this title to align with MyPlate, the 2011 revised USDA daily food recommendations. This title isone of eight in a series called: "Pebble Plus: What's on My Plate?" It offers an introduction to nutrition, healthy food choices and features the MyPlate tool. Beginning readers will have the opportunity to peruse the easy-to-read text, view the colorful photos and browse the internet for enrichment and activities. The appealing cover featuring Cheerios, spaghetti, bread and popcorn, invites young readers to harvest the information presented—growth of plants, definitions for whole and refined grains and daily needs. Then it serves up an offering of mouthwatering foodstuffs. The two-page spread features black font on bold white paper, a ribbon of orange trim, seeds and page numbers in a slice of bread with tempting images on the opposite page. Special features include a "How Much to Eat" guide, glossary, other titles to read, and FactHound internet site, as well as an index and table of contents. Research options include a class unit or March nutrition month using additional resources. The website, myplate.gov, serves to link the topics introduced including an expanded definition for grains and the two sub-groups; then it shares a lengthy list of commonly eaten grain products. Another site elaborates on the need for grains in a daily diet. This well-balanced offering serves as a great menu for young audiences. Reviewer: Barbara Troisi
