ABOUT THE TEST
The GRE Psychology Test is given three times a year by Educational Testing Service under policies set by the Graduate Record Examinations Board, an independent board affiliated with the Association of Graduate Schools and the Council of Graduate Schools. Graduate school applicants submit GRE test results together with their undergraduate records as part of a highly competitive admissions.
The questions for the test are written by a committee of specialists who are selected from various undergraduate and graduate faculties. The test consists of approximately 205 multiple-choice questions that are designed to measure a student’s knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, and concepts in the broad field of psychology. The questions are taken from the courses of study most commonly offered in an undergraduate psychology curriculum.
The content of the test is divided into three areas. Social- or social science-oriented (about 43% of the test) questions are concerned with developmental, personality, abnormal, clinical, and social psychology. Experimental or natural-science-oriented (about 40% of the test) questions are concerned with sensation, physiology, learning, cognition, and perception. General (about 17%
of the test) questions draw on your knowledge of historical applied psychology as well as measurement, statistics, and research designs.
There are three separate scores:
A total score based on all questions.
A subscore* for social psychology questions only.
A subscore* for experimental psychology questions only.
*The questions from which the subscores are calculated are not labeled separately and are distributed
throughout the entire test.
GRE PSYCHOLOGY PRO STUDY PLAN
Making the Most of REA’s 12-Week Pro Study Plan
As a busy student or professional, you may be wondering how you will find time to work, have a social life, take care of family obligations, and prepare for the GRE Psychology Subject Test. But don’t worry, our GRE Pro Study Plan gives you a complete road map from now until test day. This flexible schedule allows you to work at your own pace and shows you how to prepare for the GRE
Psychology Test as efficiently as possible. You’ll get organized, stay on track, and make the most of your valuable study time.
You will need to make time every day to study for the GRE Psychology Test. How and when you study is up to you, but consistency is the key to completing your GRE preparation. Make studying a priority and consider it a “job” until you take the GRE exam.
Keep in mind that a high score on the GRE doesn’t just help you get into a better grad school; it helps move your career forward. Therefore, a solid commitment to daily study is worth every minute of your time. The results will pay off in the long run!
This study schedule will help you become thoroughly prepared for the GRE Psychology. Although the schedule is designed as a 6-week study program, it can be compressed into a 3-week plan by combining two weeks of study into one. If you choose the 6-week schedule, you should plan to study for at least one hour a day. GRE examinees who are following a 3-week program need to set aside at
least two hours for studying every day.
Find a study routine that works for you and stick to it! Some people like to get up early and study for an hour or two before going to work. Others might choose to study while commuting, on their lunch hour, at the library, or at home after work. Whatever schedule you choose, make a commitment to study every day even on weekends. Remember, daily focused concentration on the GRE subject matter will help you retain more information, fully grasp the material tested, and improve your overall GRE score.
This GRE test prep with TestWare® offers you additional practice and reinforcement. We’ve included six practice tests in the book, and three of these practice tests appear on our interactive, easy-to-use CD. The TestWare® CD offers diagnostic feedback, on-screen detailed answer explanations, and timed testing conditions, so you can “practice for real” and know what to expect on the GRE Psychology before exam day.
The CD comes with step-by-step installation instructions and a tutorial that explains how to answer the practice test questions. No matter what your technological skill level, you will benefit from taking our exams on CD. It’s a great way for you to practice your test-taking skills while mastering the GRE subject matter.
