Purpose: The aim is to provide practical and balanced information on the full range of psychotropic and nonpsychotropic medications used to treat children and adolescents with mental health disorders. The basic purpose is to cover in detail medication use with advice on dose titration, maintenance, tapering off, and discontinuation syndrome and its management. The book covers most of the practical problems that may arise during management and highlights precautions and warnings on each medication. It includes information on current FDA-approved medications and has up-to-date evidence on off-label uses. The book is well organized and is very user friendly.
Audience: This is a valuable resource for clinicians working with children with mental illness, including child psychiatrists, general psychiatrists, pediatricians, and family practitioners as well as residents and fellows. It also can be useful for medical students interested in the field as well.
Features: The book is broadly divided into two sections. The first section includes not only general principles of psychopharmacotherapy, but also has practical information about medicolegal aspects and ethical issues in prescribing medications to children and adolescents. It provides useful guidelines on assessment before starting a medication to managing adverse effects. The bulk of the book, section two, presents information on specific drugs with practical advice for clinicians from starting dosage to treating withdrawal if applicable. As in previous editions, the book continues features like including the FDA black box and bold print warnings. Descriptions of individual medications start with any current FDA warnings in bold, pharmacokinetics, available preparations and dosages, interactions, adverse effects and their management. Indications with FDA approval and off-label use are clearly stated with FDA indications in specific age groups in a box. This book covers most of the medications prescribed for children with psychiatric disorders including not only newer second generation neuroleptics, but also agents used to control weight gain as a result of neuroleptic use, such as metformin and topiramate. The book compiles all relevant evidence on medications like these and others that are being prescribed by clinicians without FDA indications. The authors did not fail to include rarely used medications and have conveniently grouped them in the last chapter. This book provides plenty of practical information, but if readers want in-depth information on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of a drug, they should refer to other comprehensive textbooks of psychopharmacology.
