Grief is the Worst Ninja
A heartfelt and darkly humorous look into the 72 hours following the unexpected loss of a pet, Grief is the Worst Ninja is a sudden memoir, an unplanned book in response to an unplanned situation.

On September 20th, 2014, I woke up and my cat Dorian didn't. When I stopped screaming, I started writing. This book is the result. The first thing that you need to understand about it is that this was intended as a self-help book. By this I mean that I wrote it to help myself. I don't know exactly who you are or what you're looking for here, but please know that I have no help to offer you at this time. I'm very sorry, but that's simply how it is.

Grief is the worst ninja. It strikes without warning, jumping out and stabbing you in the heart or the head at the moments you're most vulnerable. Against this foe, I am completely helpless. What help could I offer anyone else?

That was what I thought when I wrote this. And yet within hours of publication, this book had become my fastest-selling work to date and people were writing to tell me how helpful they found it.

I know that the narrative convention demands that I say that Dorian touched a lot of people's lives in his lifetime, but that wouldn't be true. Sometimes, he would watch people's lives from a safe distance or listen to them from just out of sight on the second floor landing, but mostly what he did with regards to other people's lives was to run and hide until the people who had them went away.

Still, it brings me some comfort to know that he is touching people now. Maybe his story will bring some comfort to you.
