Description: This is a comprehensive look at bereavement from an interdisciplinary perspective, in terms of theory and practice, backed by research with contributions from an international group of authors.
Purpose: According to the editors, who have compiled a trilogy of handbooks on bereavement, "Our continued aim has been to provide a synthesis of scientific knowledge about the phenomena and manifestations of bereavement from a standpoint that emphasizes theoretical approaches and scientific method."
Audience: The book is intended for both researchers and practitioners. Three of the editors are from Utrecht University. Dr. Margaret Stroebe is associate professor of psychology, Dr. Schut is professor of psychology, and Dr. Wolfgang Stroebe is professor of social, organizational, and health psychology. The fourth editor, Dr. Hansson, is professor emeritus at the University of Tulsa. The contributors represent international authorship from England, Canada, and Israel.
Features: The introduction defines the fundamental concepts. Next, various theories and psychometric approaches to the assessment of bereavement are introduced. There is some discussion regarding inclusion of a grief disorder in the DSM-V. The book also looks at grief across cultures and religious perspectives. Other chapters cover the effects of the death of a child on families as well as parental death on young children. Lastly, the book discusses the efficacy of various intervention programs. The book is thorough, covering definitions and theory through intervention programs. In the chapter about including prolonged grief disorder in DSM-V, the authors discuss how normal grieving differs from prolonged grief, which forms a distinct cluster of symptoms. They also talk about concerns about pathologizing reactions to loss and adding stigma to suffering. Another informative chapter (15) covers posttraumatic growth following loss. The author does a nice job of showing how an individual can find meaning and psychological growth within loss. Finally, the chapter on reaction to romantic rejection (17) is fascinating reading. The authors include functional magnetic resonance imaging studies as well as psychological processes such as abandonment rage and separation anxiety. The book contains both an author and subject index along with instructive tables and figures.
Assessment: This book really delivers the goods as a comprehensive look at bereavement. Theory and research are integrated coherently with practice. It is must reading for those who counsel the bereaved. However, anyone who has a clinical practice must have this information because bereavement is a topic every client will grapple with at one time or another.
