Description: This is an update of a 2007 study of U.S. insurance and the issues surrounding the provision of health insurance from an economic viewpoint. Coverage spans from the historical roots of insurance to the current challenges of the Affordable Care Act.
Purpose: The purpose is to present health insurance from "the inside out," specifically, the role of private insurance in the U.S. Using an economic lens, the book presents how the Affordable Care Act and changes in reimbursement patterns for care is impacting insurance, insurance coverage, rates, and why consumers need to understand insurance issues better to make informed decisions.
Audience: The primary audience includes those in health administration, health policy, and public health programs. The author includes clinicians — especially physicians — as a potential audience. Nurses and other health professionals also would benefit from the book.
Features: This subject is complex and readers need at least a basic understanding of economics and statistics to really grasp the material. The book moves through the traditional topics of the historical roots of U.S. insurance to types of coverage and on to specifics of risk adjustment, pricing, disease management/care coordination, and flexible spending accounts. This is a teaching textbook that has discussion questions at the end of each chapter and online PowerPoint slides for faculty teaching the content.
Assessment: Other books about managed care and insurance are not as specific or in-depth as this one. This second edition, which is needed in light of all the changes in healthcare delivery and insurance that have occurred in the last few years, presents fresh new material. The book covers the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the impact of employer-sponsored health insurance and some of the adverse effects of such plans, accountable care organizations, the use of hierarchical condition categories (HCCs), the use of disease management models as ways to reduce health insurance usage costs, and health insurance exchanges. This book provides comprehensive discussions about a very complex topic.
