This is the fifth edition of the classic textbook of nephropathology, first published in 1966 by Dr. Heptinstall, whose name it now bears. The purpose is to provide an authoritative update to the previous edition, review new developments, and summarize current clinical and laboratory data on human kidney diseases. The book is primarily directed at pathologists and pathology residents, but will also be read by clinicians and laboratory scientists dealing with kidney diseases. In its fifth edition, this comprehensive textbook of kidney pathology appears in two volumes. Dr. Heptinstall has stepped down as the principal author/editor and has given over the task of editing the book to four well known nephropathologists. The editors, who have also written or coauthored a significant number of the 34 chapters, have enlisted the help of additional 27 pathologists, mostly from the United States. Although multi-authored, (and multi-edited), this book has managed to retain the principal tenets and features of the original work conceived by Dr. Heptinstall. It reads well, the illustrations are outstanding, the coverage is encyclopedic, and the references are up to date. The emphasis is on diagnostic pathology and clinical aspects of renal pathology, but with a strong underpinning in experimental and investigative nephrology. Even though Dr. Heptinstall was not directly involved in editing the book that bears his name, the new edition is a bona fide, updated replica of his masterwork. It retains the leading position in the field as the premier textbook of nephropathology. Its coverage of classical morphologic aspects of kidney pathology and the recent developments remains unsurpassed. It belongs inall academic libraries, major hospital libraries, and departmental libraries of diagnostic pathology and nephrology departments.
The volumes are a tribute to medical scholarship and a major achivement in renal pathology. The textbook is an amazing accomplishment of lasting value, an achievement of which the coauthors, editors, and publisher may be proud.
