Hermes Literary Journal 2013: The University of Sydney Union's Annual Literary and Creative Anthology
The Hermes literary journal is an annual anthology published by the University of Sydney Union and is comprised of the best new literature and creative works produced by students at the University of Sydney. Hermes is the oldest literary journal in Australasia, having been published since 1886, and been edited by H. V. Evatt, Les Murray and Geoffrey Lehmann. The journal itself is a platform which enables up-and-coming writers, artists and photographers to gain invaluable experience and exposure within the professional publishing industry. The works are of an exceptionally high quality and reflect the breadth of rising talent within the University of Sydney community. The journal includes both romantic and thought-provoking poetry, philosophic yet redeeming prose, awe-invoking photography and enthralling visual artworks. The journal traces the most accomplished pieces composed within a wide variety of mediums and represents the culmination of artistic influences drawn from contributors with diverse academic and cultural backgrounds. The theme for Hermes 2013 was ‘Elements’, interpreted within each piece in a unique and memorable manner reflective of the idiosyncratic experiences of the respective contributor. This year’s edition of the journal was overseen by an editorial team comprised of senior undergraduate students Patricia Arcilla, Nicholas Fahy, Melanie Kembrey and Nicholas Richardson.
