Beginning readers who love nonfiction and enjoy discovering "true" bits of information will devour this inviting book. A Level 1 "Blastoff! Reader" in the "Animal Safari" subseries, its features include bright colors, large type, and fascinating close-ups of hippos in their habitats. The amount of text in each spread is enough to interest without overwhelming the reader and is followed by a corresponding photograph. One page introduces the hippo's webbed feet, but there is no close-up that gives a particularly good view of its feet. Readers will find the pictures of the bellowing male with his mouth wide open and teeth exposed especially engrossing and will be captivated by the photo of the hippos engaged in battle. This book will no doubt whet the appetite of kids who want to know more and may send them to other sources for further information. It would be a good book for sharing with younger children interested in animals. Vocabulary is boldfaced and is included in a glossary. A bibliography, related Web site, and index follow.
Hippopotamuses spend much of their time in the water. It is the only way they can keep their huge bodies cool because they do not sweat! In this book, children will be surprised as they discover many cool facts about how hippopotamuses eat, move, and more.
