The holiday season is here, and the kids in Room 3B are learning about all the different ways people celebrate. In addition to Christmas and Hanukkah, there?s Kwanzaa, Three Kings? Day, Korean New Year, and more. All the talk about holidays has everyone feeling festive. Everyone, that is, except Harry. He doesn?t seem to care about the holidays, the class pet, or even the new student in class. It?s clear that something is bugging Harry?but what could it be?

About the Author

Suzy Kline, the author of nineteen previous Horrible Harry books and four books about Song Lee, lives in Willington Connecticut with her husband, Rufus. Suzy and Rufus have been married for thirty-eight years. They met in the state where they both grew up: California. Suzy grew up in Berkeley and Rufus in Sacramento. Suzy graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in European history. She met Rufus at the Davis campus while attending that campus for a year. They got married and lived in different places, including Canada, before settling into Connecticut, the state they now call home.

Suzy taught in 5th and 6th grades at Shannon Elementary School in Richmond, California for 3 years, and 2nd and 3rd grades at Southwest Elementary School in Torrington, Connecticut for 24 years before retiring this past June. She now enjoys writing full-time and visiting schools and libraries. The couple share their home with two cats, Teeter and Hoag. They have two daughters, Jennifer and Emily, and four grandchildren: Jake, Kenna, Gabby and Saylor. A fifth grandchild is due in September, 2006. Suzy's mother just turned 96. She dedicated her most recent book, Horrible Harry Takes the Cake to her.

Suzy and Rufus enjoy attending UConn football and basketball games, and Suzy uses the UConn library as a reference for her writing facts.

What's wrong with Harry? He's not being horrible, and that is quite noticeable as Room 3B begins to celebrate five winter holidays: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Three Kings' Day, Korean New Year and Christmas. Dexter Sanchez' father brings in a shoe and a crown cake to explain Three Kings' Day, celebrated among Hispanic peoples. Ida Burrell's mom comes with a hat-making project and explains the new African-American holiday of Kwanzaa. Everyone has fun but Harry. What's wrong? Poor Harry is discombobulated since his great-grandpa moved into a nursing home; but celebrating Hanukkah there on a field trip seems to be just what the class and Harry need to bring back his good spirits and his horrible ways. This just-right book never gets pedantic while explaining the different cultures in Room 3B and always stays in character for early chapter book readers. The pen and ink pictures are irreverent and cute, exactly meeting the spirit of the irrepressible third graders. Fun for all, and lots of information, too. 2003, Viking, Ages 7 to 10.

Gr 1-3-It's December, and the children in Room 3B are excited about a new classmate, a new class pet, and the chance to learn about the five winter holidays that various classmates celebrate-Three Kings' Day, Korean New Year, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Christmas. Harry seems listless, but snaps back to his usual self when the teacher finds out that he's unhappy because his great-grandpa has gone to a nursing home, and she takes the whole class to visit him. The presentation of the various holidays is uneven in coverage and somewhat dull, although things pick up at the end when the kids receive gifts from their Secret Santas.
