Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth

Third grader, Doug and his friend Harry are again center stage in this school centered story that is the latest in many tales with these same characters. The June box is the holding place for all the things taken from the class by the teacher, Miss Mackle. These include Harry's stub people and Dexter's Elvis bobblehead. One morning the youngsters are unpleasantly surprised when greeted by a substitute by the name of Mrs. Bernbotham. She is known as "the meanest substitute teacher on the planet." This comes through loud and clear in the wonderful black and white sketch on page ten. Mrs. Bernbotham promptly writes a difficult math assignment on the board and tells everyone to get busy. Trouble begins when Song Lee shows Doug the origami pig she made as a birthday present for her grandmother who lives in Korea. Harry admires the pig and makes pig noises, causing Song Lee to laugh. Mrs. Bernbotham promptly confiscates the pig for the June box. How Song Lee gets her pig back so it can be sent to Korea involves several twists and turns, but eventually all turns out well. Newly independent readers are sure to enjoy and relate to this realistic portrayal of the ups and downs of school life. If other titles in this series are popular, add this to the collection.
