The "That's Gross! A Look at Science" series focuses on those parts of science that we wouldn't talk about at the dinner table. The hospital has some gross parts. From bedpans to bed sores, stitches to leeches, the hospital has many yucky features. And this is what the writers and designers of this series are counting on. Gross sells. Gross is fun. Because some adults don't like gross, some kids will like it even more. To a large degree, the gross factor works for this book. Murray explains that "If you went swimming and found a leech on your toe, you'd probably scream. But sometimes at hospitals, leeches are put on people's skin on purpose! They suck blood to help people heal." and this reviewer can imagine readers recoiling in horror. The writing is simple and short, with about 40 words on every two-page spread. The pictures showing that hospitals are bright—and a little gross. The book's design also uses images of child models looking amazed and grossed out. The kids are engaging, but you know they aren't seeing the same pictures we see. They are just posing. While the science of this book is fairly limited, the nonfiction explanation of the inner functions of hospital is well done. The picture of maggots is a winner.
